User Submitted Content / DX Reviews: Dead Rising 2
« Last post by DXmagma on October 08, 2010, 02:03:56 pm »

Before I begin this review let me say if your first impression is from your first playthrough, withhold judgment. Dead rising 2 was designed to be played multiple times and won't truly shine until you've completed at least 1 playthrough and have restarted the story. With that in mind, let us review dead rising 2.

dead rising 2 places players in the shoes of Chuck Greene, a motorcross super star turned zombie killer show contestant, after there's an outbreak in fortune city. Chuck is framed for releasing the zombies and must now find the real culprit before the military arrives in three days. Along with this Chuck's daughter Katey was bitten in the vegas outbreak and chuck must now find her Zombrex for her daily injections or she'll turn.

Luckily Chuck isn't afraid of a few thousand zombies and fearlessly rips through the hordes to find Zombrex and clear his name. The story is surprisingly good, there were some twists and turns I wasn't expecting but it's nothing major. No, the place where this game shines is cementing the fact that Chuck is a Badass by having him slay through these hordes.

Yes the strong point of Dead Rising 2 is, of course, the zombie killing. Much like it's predecessor DR2 lets you pick up whatever's lying around in Fortune City to help in your horde killing ways. However, Chuck Greene is so Badass that he is able to COMBINE these weapons of minimal destruction into wretched planet destroyers. Sometimes.

One of the biggest mechanics in DR2 is the ability to combine weapons into bigger, better, stronger weapons. Well, occasionally. The results of combining weapons can go from extremely useful to totally worthless. Some of the stranger weapons are totally useless, like the fountain lizard, or the IED that requires guns to work properly. By the way guns suck in this game don't waste your time. But some of the weapons are simply powered up melee attacks, like the spiked bat and knife gloves, work exceptionally well.

However, for all of this DR2 does have one major flaw. The bosses. The psychopaths are extremely difficult, like soul crushingly difficult at times. They are all faster then Chuck, much stronger, and many have cheap attacks that are nearly impossible to dodge and going up against them unprepared is a death wish.

But it's not all bad, DR2 features a Restart story option where you (what else?) restart the story but keep your current experience. For you best first experience, I say restart at case 4. that should make your second playthrough golden. Also, when going up against psychos, always, ALWAYS have knife gloves on hand. Always.

No, the worst part of DR2 by far is the save system. The game only allows you to save in certain places for one thing. Now that wouldn't be so bad, plenty of games do that and aren't soul crushing, but the game also doesn't auto save. Again, that on it's own wouldn't be so bad, but the game has no checkpoints. Ever.

Die at the hands of a wretched psycho? Didn't save since two cases ago? Well that's too bad, you have to do that all over again. Yeah, it's a pain in the ass. For all of it's flaws the save system is by far the worst.

Dead Rising 2 isn't a bad game by any merit, while it's frustratingly difficult the first time through, the second, third, and even fourth all feel fresh and fun. There's tons to do in the game, most of which I don't even know about.

So grab your paddlesaw, some orange juice, and pray sullivan's aim is off today.
