man, woman, wild review

Yep, it's official. Survival shows are now the new fitness shows. They've grown so big it's almost guaranteed success. Shows like swamp people, the colony, Man vs wild, dual survival, and countless others show you how to survive in harsh conditions you most likely will never be within 500 feet of.

I gotta admit, i'm not a fan of man vs wild. I just don't find it very interesting, though that time when he jumped on a train and knock on the conductor's door was pretty badass. Anyway if you want to make it as a good show in this genre you need a hook, a gimmick, and as money hungry has taught me, sometimes these shows can be fantastic.

So that is what brought me to watch man women wild. It sounds like a gimmicky rip off, just like money hungry, so maybe it'd have some of that weird charm to it. Man women wild places survival expert Mykel Hawke and his field journalist wife Ruth England as they try to survive together I the wild.

It's actually a pretty interesting concept, two survival experts who spend their lives together, seeing how nature doesn't just test their will but their marriage as well. Except that's not the concept. That's how this show was sold, two survival experts, but Ruth doesn't have much survival knowledge. She's good with her head but doesn't know anywhere near what Mykel does.

This, strangely makes the show more interesting. It shows how an expert would teach someone who doesn't know these techniques, as well as the difficulties with doing that. And that whole ?test their marriage? thing is still there. Huh, I just noticed something. They're married but have different last names. Weird Ruth strikes me as someone who would take a last name.

Anyway to the show. The first episode I watched had them stuck in somewhere like Ireland, which I later learned wasn't Ireland. I wonder where they were. Anyway it actually wasn't very interesting,  it didn't seem particularly difficult to me. I mean, I imagine they were pretty far from civilization but I honestly feel I could survive there until rescue.

The second episode had the duo stuck in the amazon wilderness, trying to get to the amazon river. This episode was actually pretty enjoyable. Ruth was scared and having trouble adapting, like most people would, and Mykel was unsure of their rescue, he seemed a bit discouraged. It was interesting to see these two vulnerable.

Finally, the last episode I watched was the two stuck in the Louisiana bayou. Ruth was still scared witless of the many moccasins in the swamp (being Ophidiophobic I can understand) while Mykel stays confident in the bayou. Actually it's one of the more interesting episodes.

Some of the stuff that happens is pretty interesting. Mykel almost catches both an alligator and a boar, they see a snake try to eat an eel, and even a moccasin stealing their crawdaddy bait. Plus again, it's interesting to see how someone inexperienced would react to this situation.

So overall, it's a pretty good show. It's interesting, and even if there's not a whole lot of badass train moments or conflict between the two of them, it's interesting to see how someone normal, how most of us would react to this situation. So yeah, you could watch worse survival shows, and by far there are less interesting ones out there. Now if you'll excuse me, i'm gonna try to find that clip from man vs wild.
