a DX review: The Room
« on: September 01, 2010, 07:40:09 pm »

WOW. Just...just WOW. That about sums it up. It's the one word that could mean bad just as much if not more than it can mean good. That about sums this movie up. It's so bad it's unanimously good at the same time.

I guess we just get into this thing. I'll start with the plot. I really don't know. I've seen this movie like 5 times and still have a very loose interpretation of the plot. From what I can peace together Johnny, played by Tommy Wiseau, (more on that later) is being cheated on by his fiance with his best friend. Yeah...i wouldn't take two glimpses at this movie if it wasn't for the abysmal acting. Honestly the plot isn't horrible there are much worse plots out there. It's just really boring and bland, not much goes on.

So the plot is...average. What about the acting? The acting. THE ACTING! This isn't acting this is...i don't know what this is! The word for this type of acting doesn't exist yet! UGH.

Let's start with Johnny, played by director, writer and producer (executive and normal) of the room. Now, some performances, like Matthew broderick in Godzilla, are just flat and uninteresting. Others, like Sharlto Copley in district 9, add another dimension to the character. Tommy manages to be both. Y'know those old non-Matthew Godzilla movies, where instead of subtitles they had people talk over the movie and it's horribly desynced and looks really bad, but you forgive it since they had to talk over a foreign film? Tommy Wiseau manages to do this ON HIS OWN. Every scene he's in seems a bit...off. It seems like someone realized how horrible his voice was and tried to go over it with a normal voice, but had to stop halfway through and tried to put the normal audio back but couldn't get it just right.

 YOUR TEARING ME APART LISA!

I want to talk about the other performances but I can't! The writing is so abysmally bad I can't possibly say if the acting was good or not. All the truly important scenes are either Lisa, Johnny's wife, screwing his best friend or involve Tommy wiseau, and as stated above all scenes involving Tommy have weird audio. At best it's mediocre, but making mediocre out of this script is Oscar worthy.

Oh god. This film's plot at it's core isn't half bad, but How Tommy has interpreted it in this film is horrifically bad. The acting is mediocre for most, but Tommy manages to be amazing and horrible all in one. He's amazable. What do I give this film? Well this film deserves 0 stars...but it's so much fun! Seriously this movie is hilarious in every sense of the word, there are no less than 3 meme worthy phrases in this film. So what do I give it? A 5? a 0? I give it...an N!

Yes. An N. why? Watch the movie and it'll all make sense.
